Taegeuk IL Jang represents the symbol of “Keon”, one of the 8 Kwaes (divination signs). Keon symobolises the heaven and “yang”. As “Keon” symbolizes the beginning of the creation of all things in the universe. Taegeuk IL jang therefore symbolises the beginning of training in Taekwondo. This poomsae is charaterized by its simplicity to learn and practice. It largely consists of walking and basic actions, such as arae-makki, momtong-makki, momtong-jireugi and ap-chagi. This poomsae is practiced by 8th Kup-grade trainees and above.
Starting with your feet together and your hands by your side open the hands whilst simultaneously lifting them to your solar plexus, then lowering and closing the fists to groin level . At the same time the feet are seperated to a shoulders width into naranhi seogi. These movements are all executed at the same time finishing in kibon jumbi seogi (basic ready stance).
Turn to the left through 90 degrees moving the left foot into wen apseogi (left walking stance) and execute an arae makki (low section block)
Step forward with the right foot into oreun apseogi (right walking stance), and execute a momtong bandae jireugi (opposite mid-section punch) to the solar plexus
moving the right foot first and twisting through 180 degrees turn to make an oreun ap-seogi (right walking stance) pointing in the opposite direction, and execute an arae-makki (low section block) with the right arm.
Step forwards with the right foot into wen ap-seogi (left walking stance), and execute a momtong bandae jireugi (opposite mid-section punch) to the solar plexus
Moving the left foot first turn to the left through 90 degrees into wen apkubi (left front stance), and execute a wen arae makki (left outer forearm low block),
keeping the two feet in the same position in wen apkubi (left long stance) deliver an oreon momtong baro-jireugi (right mid-section punch) to the solar plexus.
Moving the right foot turn to the right through 90 degrees into oreun ap-seogi (right walking stance) and execute a momtong an-makki (mid-section inner forearm block). Note that the left foot retains the position from the previous stance but turns to the right.
Step forward with the left foot into wen apseogi (left walking stance), and deliver a oreon momtong baro-jireugi (right mid-section punch) to the soar plexus.

Step forward with the right foot into oreon apseogi (right walking stance), and deliver a wen momtong baro-jireugi (left mid-section punch) to the solar plexus.
Moving the right foot first turn to the right through 90 degrees into oreon apkubi (right front stance), and execute an oreon arae makki (right outer forearm low block),
keeping the two feet in the same position in oreon apkubi (right long stance) deliver a wen momtong baro-jireugi (left mid-section punch) to the solar plexus.
Moving the left foot turn to the left through 90 degrees into wen ap-seogi (left walking stance) and execute an olgul makki (High section block). Note that the right foot retains the position from the previous stance but turns to the left.
With the back foot execute an oreunbal apchagi (right front kick) at the instant the foot touches the ground in oreun apseogi (right forward stance) deliver a momtong bandae jireugi (mid-section opposite punch)
moving the right foot first and twisting to the right through 180 degrees turn to make an oreun ap-seogi (right walking stance) pointing in the opposite direction, and execute an olgulmakki (high section block) with the right arm.
With the back foot execute a wenbal apchagi (left front kick) to the mid section. As soon as the kicking foot touches the ground in wen apseogi (left forward stance) a momtong bandae jireugi (mid-section opposite punch) is executed making full use of the forward movement in the punch.
Move the left foot and turn to the right through 90 degrees turning towards the original position into wen apkubi (left front stance) and execute a wen arae makki (outer forearm block) using the left arm.
Step forward with the right foot into oreun apkubi (right front stance) and deliver a momtong bandaejireugi (opposite mid-section punch) to the solar plexus. On delivering the punch shout KIHAP using the gut as the source of energy.
keeping the right foot where it is turn through 180 degrees anticlockwise and draw in the left foot returning to the kibon jumbiseogi (basic ready stance).
