Meaning of Sam Jang

Taegeuk SAM Jang symbolizes "Ree", which is one of the 8 divination signs. Rae represents "hot and bright" which is to aid the encourage of the true essence of training - moral justice and a desire to learn. New actions found with this Taegeuk are sonnal mokchigisonnal makki and the dwitkubi stance. This poomsae is characterized by successive makki and jireugi, chagi and continued jireugi. Emphasis is on the immediate counterattacks as a defence against the opponent's attack. This poomsae is practiced by 6th Kup-grade trainees and above.



JUMBI

Starting with your feet together and your hands by your side open the hands whilst simultaneously lifting them to your solar plexus, then lowering and closing the fists to groin level . At the same time the feet are seperated to a shoulders width into naranhi seogi. These movements are all executed at the same time finishing in kibon jumbi seogi (basic ready stance).

MOVEMENT 1

Turn to the left through 90 degrees moving the left foot into wen apseogi (left walking stance) and execute a wen arae makki (left low section block)

MOVEMENT 2

Deliver an oreunbal apchagi (right front kick). As soon as the foot touches the ground in oreun apkubi (right forward stance) deliver a momtong dubeon Jireugi (mid-section punch twice). First amomtong bandae Jireugi (mid section punch) then a momtong baro Jireugi (mid section reverse punch). Both punches focus on the solar plexus.

MOVEMENT 3

Turn to the right through 180 degrees clockwise moving the right foot first into oreun apseogi (right walking stance) and execute an arae makki (low section block)

MOVEMENT 4

Deliver a wenbal apchagi (left front kick). As soon as the foot touches the ground in wen apkubi (left forward stance) deliver a momtong dubeon Jireugi (mid-section punch twice). First amomtong bandae Jireugi (mid section punch) then a momtong baro Jireugi (mid section reverse punch). Both punches focus on the solar plexus.

MOVEMENT 5

Turning to the left move the left foot and turn through 90 degrees into wen apseogi (left walking stance), and deliver a hansonnal jebi poom mokchigi (inner single knife hand strike)

MOVEMENT 6

Step forward with the right foot into oreun apseogi (right walking stance) and execute a hansonnal jebipoom mokchigi (inner single knife hand strike)

MOVEMENT 7

Move the left foot to the left to make an oreun dwitkubi (right side stance), and execute a hansonnal momtong yopmakki (single knife hand mid-section block)

MOVEMENT 8

Initially leaving the right foot in the same place push the left foot forward half a step to make a wen apkubi (left front stance), at the last moment twist the right foot into the correct position and deliver a momtong barojireugi (opposite mid-section punch). The twisting of the right foot will add a considerable amount of power to the punch.
